Well, Hello there...
Sorry for being out of touch, with you two or three folks who read my rants. 2006 is here and I have decided not to rant, but pass on some feelgoodness to you all. I have been listening a seeing some pretty damn good stuff, so here are my recommends for the beginning moments of 2006.
Music musts. Get the dirt out of your goddamn ears and burn the pussy pop that you are trying to get laid to. Here is some stuff that will inflame you and your partners passion to hump, hump, hump. (There is no guarantee here, as I have not tested these tracks at all. Do try this in the safety of your own home.)
The Editors-"The Back Room" and just about everything else. They can kick Interpol's ass.
Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah-"Self Titled" Oh, I miss the Talking Heads, but these Brooklyn folks are better than a good old binge of Absinthe and Morroccon Hashish.
The Kooks-"Inside In Inside Out" (Upcoming 2006 release) I don't know what's in the water in the UK, but The Kooks are swiggin' it like drunks during prohibition. Sweet Mod rock and roll.
Princess Superstar-"My Machine" The idea, the woman, the corporation called Princess Superstar can shame any of the shitty music that passes for hip hop, with the exception of MIA, and to a lesser extent Lady Sovereign. But half the shit that is foisted on the moronic US music consumer is pure excrement compared to even the idea of Princess Superstar. Bow down and kiss her ring. Gonna shake, shake, shake....
Public Enemy-"New Whirled Odor" Now I eat my words. Public Enemy kicks all of their asses. That's all. The new cd is pure rage from long time hip hop politicos PE. If you are still listening to the 50 Cent gangsta-shit, well, never mind.
Gogol Bordello-"Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike" Eugene Hutz is a genius. Immigrating from the former Soviet Union years ago. Not content with the usual immigrant experience and largely influenced by punk, he decided to put together a cabaret of punk influenced Eastern European folk music. I had the fortune of seeing them in 2004 and was fucking blown away. Any and all accolades this band receives, is well earned. Go see them now. Buy all of their CDs, NOW!!!
The Briefs-"Steal Yer Heart" Seattle's The Briefs, return with another rock solid pogo platter. Channeling The Rezillos, The Dickies, The Damned, and just about every other great Brit. Punk Rock God Groups, The Briefs make it their own. Skinny ties, crazy shades, and spikey haircuts abound burnishing a retro-wave of just plain goodness. Pogo-au-gogo.
Buy a new set of The Briefs and you will not be able to keep your toes from tapping, plus you may find yourself retro-fitting your wardrobe down at Trash and Vaudeville.
Belle and Sebastian-"The Life Pursuit" Sometimes you get blessed with such a sweet present of pure pop greatness. I was not much of a Belle and Sebastian fan until "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" smacked me upside the head with just crazy hip swinging tunes that shook me, shook me, shook me, when I witnessed them perform at the Prospect Park bandshell in Brooklyn. The entire park was absolutely in pure pop riot. Dancing till they could dance no more, taking a swig of water and starting all over again. "Life's Pursuit" picks up where DCW left off and pours another ton of pop purity all over you. It is love at first listen. It is marriage by the end of the disc. I love these cats, and my wife loves me in turn. BTW, this has not yet been released, so keep an eye out at your local indie pop retailer.
The Arctic Monkeys-"Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not"
I want some of whatever they are taking. Whatever it is. Go see them. NME gave these boys a 10 out of 10.
The Paddingtons-"First Comes First"- Channeling the Buzzcocks into a massive brew of awesome
punk pop that shames all the little teenagers that worship at the feet of the shitty emo-core that is flooding the airwaves
stateside. Oh, come and infect our music scene, PLEASE!!!
Paul Weller-"As Is Now"- The Modfather returns with his strongest release since Wildwood. Growing older and wiser, not so cynical about love anymore, but rocking as hard as ever. Mixing The Faces, Traffic, punk, and funk. Having had the fortune of catching a love acoustic set at Tower Records a few years back, the Gods have truly blessed us with a real songwriter with integrity to share.
Ok, that is my first post of the year and I will try to be back more often.
