Slackers at the Hook, 11.12.2004
The Slackers. back from a long, long tour, gave it up to a much appreciative audience at The Hook, in Brooklyn, on Friday night. Covering much of their vast catalog, along with some great covers, including some Skatalites classics, everybody was moving the whole night. It was a welcome relief following Election Day, November 2nd. It's great to not feel alone in this time of worry over the reinstallation of a incredibly fucked up far right administration. My wife and I are huge Slackers fans not only because they have the Sixties Ska/Rocksteady vibe down, but because they are socially and politically concious individuals, and there is no better forum to place that in than music.
If you don't know the Slackers, get to know them and now. We have a special love of them and would hope that you could find that as well. For stupid reasons, ska is looked down upon in the States. Maybe it is the cynics that are always looking to keep ahead of the crown and critics, but you know, Ska is huge among all age groups in the rest of the world. So what the fuck are you fighting it for? I know that when The Specials reform, you old haters will be in the front row, so why not give it up for one of the best ska bands in the world? Ah, I forgot, you have to impress your record collector friends with some obscure Faust bootleg. (I know you, because I used to be a miserable old, college radio station asshole, just like you.) You know, you might get some love if you lay this one on your next date. Trust me.
