Abstinence Pledgers Show No Abatement in STD's.
In today's Los Angeles Times, via Bloomberg, a new study of teenagers who took pledges to delay sex until marriage, showed a surprising number of cases of STD's. Not so surprising since these programs do not take into account that many will break the pledge and there is no contraceptive or STD prevention education that is part of the program. 88% of sexually active teens who took the pledge had sex before marriage and many were less likely to use condoms for the first time. I would that these programs would work and they might if there were contingency education for those who decided that they could not keep the contract.
God Bless my good christian mother, who said to me, "I don't want you to have sex before marriage, but if you choose to, make sure that you use condoms." Wisdom imparted by a woman of deep faith. Why don't we have more of these folks in the abstinence only community?
