Bush presses for peace in Northern Ireland
To those most invested in the Peace Process in Northern Ireland, this may come as some surprise: Bush presses for peace in Northern Ireland. Now from the beginning of this administration, it has been clear that they are not interested at all in peace in Northern Ireland. They do not think it is our problem and they made no effort to push the implementaiton of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA). Yet, Bush feels it is within his right to exploit the McCartney sisters for his own cynical gain. This is a horrifying use of people clearly angry and emotional over the wrongful death of a loved one. I applaud the IRA for coming clean, though clearly it should have done so immediately and not tried to cover up the crime of some of its members.
Clearly after Tony Blair sided with the Bushies in the Iraq War, the agreement fell apart. The intransigency of the Loyalist parties, the UUP, DUP, Ian Paisley, David Trimble, etc..., has led us to this place. There ignoring of the murderous criminal groups among the Protestant community has put the IRA and Sinn Fein in between a rock and a hard place. The Republican movement has made gestures far and above what the Loyalist community has. They are much like the Far Right in this country in that even in power they rule with a paranoid iron fist. This is the way of those who stand for nothing yet claim the right to everything.
I in no way support the attempted coverup by the IRA of the McCartney murder, but let's get the facts before we race to judgement. We have seen a good 40 years of British collusion with the terrorists of the UDA, UVF, B-Specials, and this is no different. This is the last outpost of colonization for the British and even poor old Tony does not have the strength to stand up to the entrenched "For God and Ulster" goons. If I were a Republican or Nationalist in Northern Ireland, I would be loath to give up the protection of a armed force in my community as well, until their was rock solid assurance that there would be the same scrutiny of the oppositions criminal element. Catholics and Nationalists in the North have faced hundreds of years of discrimination and it still goes on today. Where is the outcry from Bush about this? What? They do not give a fuck about Northern Ireland and their disinterest, because it was a President Clinton issue, has led to the problems that are now occurring. So, ignore his sudden interest in the Peace Process. Friends in Northern Ireland, Bush doesn't give two shits about you. So, start talking to one another. We can do it and you have many friends here in the US and throughout the Irish Diaspora who are willing to help. We must all give up the gun for true peace to come.
