Around The Internet This Morning: Must Read Articles.
Several articles have come to my attention this morning that I want you to read. Having been a broadcasting and film major in college, and worked in the field in my early career before being sidetracked by the tech boom and eventually landing in advertising, they are of serious interest to me. I love radio and public broadcasting. I morn the loss of real radio and am increasingly concerned with the right wing attack on Public Broadcasting under the guise of a desire for "fair and balanced" programming, code for more Shitty "Conservative" programming please.
In the first article, Garrison Keiller, host of Prairie Home Companion, celebrates the quirkiness of low power stations. The decidedly unprofessional college station and the local preacher ranting about the issues of today, are all celebrated in that it is the broad spectrum of voices which make radio great. He laments the canned broadcasting that is Clear Channel and looks forward to the day that this monopoly implodes and is broken off into little pieces which may restore the real radio which we all fell in love with. Many of you may be to young to remember the days when radio was actually local and you could really call in a request and have it played, but that is no more. Pirate Radio and low power FM are able to provide the diversity of voices that we crave. Internet Radio and podcasting are becoming a force in their own right. Read Garrison's article here and then go out and make your own podcast.
The second article is Eric Boehlert's, one of my favorite Salon columnists, article on the Far Right's attack on PBS and the CPB (Corporation For Public Broadcasting). All I can say is that it is a supremely informative read. George W. Bush has stacked the decks in the conservative's favor with staunch Republican ideologues who only seek to ruin the last bastion of true journalism that is left on television today. Their unmitigated attacks against Bill Moyers, who throughout his years in public broadcasting has consistently produced some of the most challenging and enlightening programming ever to be seen on TV. Click on over to Salon and read the article here. (You may have to sit through a little advert if you don't already have a subscription to this great online news site.)
