Hillary Rosen Whines About Her iPod.
Hillary Rosen, former head of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the enforcement arm of the recording industry, laments that her iPod is not compatible with the other pay sites that have sprung up in the wake of the Apple Music Store. Well, Hillary, and I am sure that you are wondering why the other stores are so cheap as well. Well, pal, I want to tell you that the other sites suck. Plus, little sites like Napster, that are trading on the good will that name engenders, kills your access to the music, once your subscription is cancelled, unlike iTunes which you own the music that you pay for. Kind of like when you buy a CD, but no, your pals at the Big Record companies do not want us to own the music that we pay for, unless of course we buy the shitty CD that has one song that is even relatively listenable on it.
Let me show you the ways in which your argument is ignorant at best, disingenuous at worst.
1) Most every player device works at every one of these “stores” and it is pretty easy to keep all the songs, no matter where you got them, in a single folder or "jukebox" on your computer. Hmmm, I believe that iTunes has a folder called iTunes on the users computer and it is organized by artist. In the player interface, which you can drag and drop things from other media or hard drives to play as well. That includes music downloaded from other stores, like E-Music, which provide non-software specific Mp3 downloads.
2) But not the iPod. Most agree it is the best quality player on the market even if the cheapest one costs a few hundred dollars. The problem is that the iPod only works with either songs that you buy from the on-line Apple iTunes store or songs that you rip from your own CD’s. Refer to E-Music, or the numerous other download sites on the Internet, that allow non-device or software player downloads. (Psst, are you shilling for Microsoft now?)
Look, everybody in the computer industry is trying to shutdown Apple, because they are actually gaining market share, and in the digital music market they are the category killer. They were the first out of the gate and they are kicking everybody's ass. Plus, iTunes works with other devices, not just the iPod. Too even equate Steve Jobs with Bill Gates who has created a proprietary system with Windows, to stifle innovation, is really audacious and just plain creepy.
My advice to you Ms. Rosen is to shut up about things that you really don't know about. Your little hissy fit shows how little you know about the Pay Sites out there and clearly shows that even in your new life that you cannot keep shilling for your former clients. BTW, your little whine makes you sound like a disgraced White House reporter that was just in the news. Is your name Hillary "Guckert" Rosen. Just asking.
(Update: Tuesday, 9:22 AM, May 10, 2005): As I wrote this post, Huffington Post had not enabled comments on the Hillary Rosen article. Now the comments have been enabled and the flurry of replies puts Ms. Rosen in her place mostly for the inept shilling for her former clients, The Music Industry. Good going folks. I hope this will let the folks at Huffington Post know that the need for real information, not wild silliness, is what we need. BTW, I love Arianna and I believe that the Huffington Post can be a great source for debate on all sides of the issues.
